Loans closed for the construction of a 1,560 km power line between Cameroon and Chad

According to an information note from the Ministry of Water and Energy (Minee) of Cameroon, with the concessional loan 385 million dollars (about 225 billion FCFA) approved on June 16, 2020 by the Council of administration of the World Bank, the financing of the electrical interconnection project between Cameroon and Chad is complete.

This same project had already been the subject of a financing agreement of 244.4 million dollars (nearly 150 billion FCFA), signed on April 3, 2020 between the Cameroonian government and the African Development Bank (AfDB). On February 21, 2019, Cameroon had also signed a financing agreement with the European Union (EU) up to 30 million euros (19.65 billion FCFA) for the benefit of this infrastructure. But in its briefing note, the Minee does not mention European funding, which is, moreover, a donation from the 11th European Development Fund, even less the counterpart from the States.

The electric interconnection project between Cameroon and Chad consists concretely in the construction of an electricity transmission line, over a length of 1,560 km, between the two countries. According to information from the Minee, the share of funding made available by the World Bank will enable the national component of the project, called RIS-RIN, to be carried out. The aim here is to build a 225 KV transmission line, over a 560 km line, between the future Nachtigal dam (420 MW), in the Center region of Cameroon, and Ngaoundéré, the regional capital of the Adamawa, passing through the cities of Ntui, Yoko and Tibati.

This line in gestation will thus interconnect the South interconnected network (RIS), which has a large hydroelectric production park, with the North interconnected network (RIN), which, meanwhile, faces a production deficit and low rate of access to electricity.

This part of the project brings opportunities for the three northern regions of Cameroon, which will thus be crossed by a modern power transmission line. According to government projections, 100,000 new connections will be made in this part of Cameroon, as part of a large parallel rural electrification project targeting more than 500 localities in northern Cameroon.
